Shrimad Ramayana- Balakanda- 3 (Post 9)

Recap from last week: Sri Rama along with his three brothers was born to King Dasharadha and were named Rama, Bharatha, Lakshmana and Shathrughna.

Why was Rama specifically named Rama? "Ramayathi ithi Rama" meaning one who makes others happy. That is why uttering/writing "Rama", listening/discussing the story of Rama gives immense happiness and removes troubles from one's life. Rama comes from combining the "agni-beeja: 'RA'" and an "amrutha- beeja: 'MA'". "Vibharthi ithi Bharathaha" Bharatha the second son was named so because he took all the pain, he took blame when everyone accused him of conspiring along with queen Kaikeyi to send Rama to forests. Secondly, he ruled the kingdom for 14 long years with only one thought in his mind that this rajya belonged to Rama and not his and returned it to Rama the minute he came back from the forests and stepped down to a sub- ordinate position under Rama without hesitating. Third son is Lakshmana- "Lakshmi Sahitha" his Lakshmi was his eldest brother Rama. King Dasharadha did not ask Lakshmana to go to the forests along with Rama but he went, he went leaving his wife behind in the palace to serve his brother, he couldn't ever live without his eldest brother. The last son was Shathrughna "anthah shathru vijetha" a man who won over his Indriyaas.

Qualities of Rama:
Ramo rathikarah pithuhu: The most famous quality of Rama was "pithru- vakya- paripaalana". He was ever obedient to his father. He never asked any question in return when his father asked him to do something. One best example is; on one evening King Dasharadha called Rama and asked him to get ready to get crowned as the future king. Rama never asked why or when or never was excited. The next morning, King called him again and asked him to leave everything as is and walk out of the kingdom to live in the forests for fourteen long years. As per us, he should have at least then objected his father and override his rule but Rama did not do that! He didn't even ask the reason, he immediately left the palace. Even king himself asked his son Rama to override him and take kingdom into his hands and throw him into prison but Rama said all that he knows was to obey his father, which he will do by going to the forests.

Vishwamithra Shishya: Another great quality Rama taught us through his life was to be sincere and ever obedient to his teachers. When King Dasharadha sent Rama and Lakshmana along with sage Vishwamithra to save his yaaga from demons, Rama and Lakshmana were kids, still they never disobeyed their teacher, waited all six days and nights without food and water and not sleeping even for a minute. The demons tested their patience but the brothers were never agitated. They waited patiently for 6 days and nights and fought courageously against the mighty demons and saved the yaaga from being destroyed. All this because, their teacher said so.

This is one of the qualities that we are forgetting and even the movies today project that we could insult our parents and teachers and ridicule them! Is it not time to change? Is it not time to teach our kids about Rama and tell his stories so that they grow up with respect towards others and become good citizens? The society today is bad because we made it so. When a mother ignores her kid's lying to her she is raising a future con- man. If a mother ignores her kid being a bully and rude she is preparing the future rowdy. If a mother doesn't teach her son to respect a woman, a mother or a girl then she must be prepared to see her son as a future rapist. Pardon me, but that is what is happening today! If we don't teach our son/daughter how Rama behaved and change our kid's behavior to good; is this not what we get ultimately?! Studies are a milestone but not the ultimate goal. Shaping up a character is the goal. The pride you feel when everyone praises your son/ daughter is everything you would want. It is not too late. Let us teach Ramayana. Make the kids think and act like Rama and that makes a better tomorrow.

Pumsaam mohana roopaya: One other great quality of Rama was to be devoted to one woman all his life. His father had 360 wives, he was the King-to- be, He was so charming that even men were jealous of his beauty, he could get any woman he wanted if he would say yes! but no! never did he think of any other woman and more over he cried, controlled his bad anger and turned it to his strength, waged a war against the mightiest enemy with just mere monkeys, fought endlessly for a full year to win his wife back from the evil clutches but not even once did he think of leaving Seetha for another woman.

Firm was Rama about Seetha and equally rooted was Seetha about Rama. Ravana showed her every excuse to leave Rama and be with him, he has shown his strength, wealth, power, anger and promised her that she would be his Queen if she would agree. But Seetha stayed all one year without even drinking a drop of water from his Kingdom (This might not seem realistic to some of us but wait till we read SundaraKanda to know how deterministic she was and how she survived without eating/ drinking anything.) At a point even Sri Hanuman offered her that he would carry her to Rama that immediate second if she would agree. She said, "though you are like my son, I would not accept anyone other than Rama to save me." That is what devotion means.  This is what all young adults- both men and women should learn today. Love is in the air these days but once you choose a partner let be married or to-be married; be devoted to that person. Cheating, abusing or two-timing is not what Ramayana taught us. Ramayana taught us pure love and devotion to that only one special person in our life.

Ramo dwir naa abhibhashathe: Rama never changed his stand from what he said earlier. "Oke maata oke baanam" as we say in Telugu. He taught us the power of word/ talking. He would never say anything casually. Every word from his mouth was thought about and spoken carefully. Never did he make shallow promises. Once he said it he would do it no matter what. Being deterministic but not egoistic at the same time is what we should learn from this. Why make fake promises about things we know we wouldn't do anyway? He promised queen Kaikeyi that he would live in the forests for 14 years and he stood on that word even when Kaikeyi and Bharatha pleaded him to come back. He said that he promised his father and step-mother that he would stay away 14 years and did the same no matter what.

Ramo Vigraha vaan Dharmaha: He was the walking form of Dharma. The best example for this is, Vaali while at the verge of death after fighting with Rama, asked Rama a simple question. He asked, "O Rama! why did you choose friendship with my timid brother Sugreeva instead of me? If you could have chosen friendship with me, I would instruct Ravana, who is scared of me, to return Seetha the next minute! She would have been beside you by now and you could avoid all this pain! Why? Why did you choose my brother instead of me?"

Rama replied, "O Vaali! I prefer Dharma over anything else in this world. You were against Dharma and threw your brother out from your kingdom illegally; on the other hand Sugreeva did not want to kill you just because you were his elder brother, even after you took away his wife. He stuck to Dharma. That is why I chose Sugreeva over you. Though I know you are mightier and stronger than Sugreeva, but you are not Dharmavaan (one who follows dharma) like Sugreeva."

Shrimad Ramayanam- Balakanda -2 (Post 7)

Namaste!

Recap from last week: Sage Rushyashrunga and his disciples were invited to Ayodhya by King Dasharadha to perform the great Ashwamedha yaaga.

King Dasharadha on an auspicious day requested Sage Rushyashrunga to head and lead the Ashwamedha yaaga. After agreeing to the request, Sage Rushyashrunga ordered the king to perform the yaaga rituals under his guidance and leave the horse without any guard.

Ashwamedha yaaga is one of the most sacred yaagas that was performed in the earlier yugas where in a horse would be left free to roam without its guard. Whichever kingdom it enters, the horse shall not be stopped. If it is stopped then it means the king of that kingdom has chosen to fight against this King and he would be defeated and that kingdom would be merged in Kosala.

To start this yaaga, King Dasharadha went himself to invite all the purohiths and his teachers to attend the yaaga. why did he have to invite his purohiths and respect them though himself being an emperor? purohith means pura+hitha, one who wishes for the good of others, If a guru or purohith is pleased, that is all you would want in your life for whatever he would wish for you would come true. Once the great Adi Shankaracharya went for his bhiksha and stopped infront of an old woman's house. He asked her for  bhiksha, she came out with a dry amla (indian gooseberry) fruit and gave it to him telling that that is all she had with her. He was pleased with her generosity and immediately uttered a poem called "Kanakadhaara Stuthi" right there. Goddess Lakshmi was so pleased that she showered golden amlas then and there. That is the power of a guru, a purohith and a teacher. Never ever disrespect any guru or purohith however  he is.

So King Dasharadha was told to start the preparations and all this year yagnas will be taking place and there would be annadaana every day. King Dasharadha fed everyone who ever came to him for whole one year. Also, he ordered his ministers to get ready for this and also invite, the elderly, the people who had done any sort of yagnas earlier, the people who knew Vaastu, leaders, the construction people who would be needed to build houses for everyone who would reside there for an year until this finishes, carpenters, labourers, accountants, sculptors, actors and actresses for entertainment. Along with these people he asked them to gather people to be ready for annadaana thrice daily. He ordered that not even a single person should go without eating and also no one should leave half hearted; everyone should be fed with love, respect and to their heart's content and also no one were to be insulted. Also he ordered his prime minister Sumantra to personally invite King Janaka , the king of Kashi, the king of Kekaya- his father inlaw, king Romapaada- sage Rushyashrunga's father inlaw, kings of sindhu and Souveera, sourashtra and southern kingdoms.

So after an year the horse came back to the yagnashaala (where the yagna is taking place) on the banks of Sarayu.  Kids, women, men, diseased, kings, lords, servants, sanyasis, workers, tapasvis every one... literally everyone were fed what they needed and how they wanted all that year. Some lakhs of people ate and happily blessed him that his wish would be fulfilled. Our lives would be blessed if we could at least feed one or two people heartily. It is said that God comes in the form of needy. Never reject anyone who is in need. Feed the homeless, feed the needy, donate to temples who do this, donate to people who serve cows- for cows are known to have all the Gods in them, never kill them! Donate to veda paathashaalas for they would create future purohiths who would bless our children, donate to orphanages, God would definitely reward us when we need!

A golden platform was  built  to finish the yaaga. The next day a smoke emitting from the yagna was inhaled by Dasharadha and his Queen and thus finished the yaaga by rewarding these purohiths generously. Along with these he rewarded them with ten lakh cows, ten crore gold coins and 40 crore silver coins. (Ashwamedha yaga is not to be conducted in this Kaliyuga, but H.H. Sri Chandrasekhara Paramacharya swami has concluded that anyone who does or sponsors the funeral ceremonies of an orphan dead body is considered to have done an Ashwamedha yaaga)

He then proceeded forward to do an "ishti", a yaga which would help him get what he wanted. Since he wanted a son, Sage Rushyashrunga asked him to perform  a "putra- kama- ishti" = homa to fulfill a desire to have a son. Every God was called through homa and they would sit there and so there came Lord Brahma. Everyone else there then complained to him about Ravana. They said " O lord Brahma, Ravana's tortures are now unbearable, with your boons, he now controls everything even the sun and the moon. The wind follows his orders and the sea stops its tides when he comes near. He insults  everyone who worships lord Vishnu and not him. So here a question would arise in the minds of some of us, why would lord give boons to demons and the bad people? Ever thought why would all the rakshasaas pray to Lord Brahma or Shiva or Durga and they grant their wishes? It is because after all they are their children too! Imagine a father with 5 sons out of whom 4 turned out to be hard working and good people and the last one turned into a thief. If this father was having a celebration at his home wouldn't he invite the last son too? wouldn't he give him some money to buy some clothes and also give him another chance to change himself and come into the right path? Father would then at last call the cops as a last measure even if the son wouldn't change after repeated efforts. Even this effort is to save his son from the ultimate death penalty. The same is with the God, he cannot ignore his sons who turned bad and only tend to good people. He would give them a chance, give them what they ask and wait for some time to see if they change, but if they won't then he himself would come down to end them and restore peace.

So here at the yaagashaala everyone told Brahma what a headache this Ravana has become. Lord Brahma accepted this and said Ravana when prayed to me excluded Nara and vaanara, man and monkey. But any man cannot be able to end Ravana knowing his strength.  When they were thinking what to do then Sri Maha Vishnu came there all of a sudden and everyone bowed to him and requested him to take that human form and help them. Lord doesn't come after any one just like that because some one asked. He said  "Beware everyone! if some one destructed the law, objected/ rejected the vedas, troubled the good and the sanyasis, killed the cows and at last never respected me (God) then I would come down to end him!" He said this time I will take a human form and become the son of this king Dasharadha and kill that Ravana, not just him but anyone who is related to Ravana in a bad way and then rule this Earth for eleven thousand years to prove the greatness of humans.

After this puthrakameshti homa, Yagna purusha came out from the homa kunda and then walked straight to king Dasharadha and gave him the paayasam cooked by the devatas and asked him to give this to his beloved wives out of his 360 wives (true!) so that they will bear your sons and saying so yagna purusha disappeared. Thus, Dasharadha made the payasam in to 2 halves,  he gave one half of the entire to Queen Kousalya, 3/8th to Sumitra and 1/8th to Kaikeyi. Dasharadha was now eager to see his sons take birth. On the other hand, Lord Brahma ordered all the other Deva, kinnera, Kimpurusha, Gandharva men to give birth to sons that are vaanaras (monkeys) but are as mighty as their fathers to help Sri Rama in the future fight. So following the orders, Vali was born as the son of Indra, Sugriva to Surya, Taarudu to Bruhaspathi, Jambavanta to Brahma, Gandhamana to Kubera, Nala to Vishwakarma, Neela to Agni, maindha and dvivida to Ashwini devatas, Sushena to Varuna, Sharabha to Parjanya, Sriman Hanuma to Vaayu. Sriman Hanuman took birth as the mightiest among all the vaanaras and with utmost love and respect to wards Sri Rama. Also there were many more lakhs of vanaras that were born to help Sri Rama and defeat Ravana. These monkeys were mighty and capable of lifting elephants, mountains with their hands and throw away.

On the auspicious day of punarvasu nakshatra, karkataka lagna, navami tithi, chaitra maasa and when all the planets were at their highest and best positions,  Lord Maha Vishnu took birth as the Son of king Dasharadha and queen Kousalya in the Ikshvaku Vamsha. Kaikeyi gave birth to second son of Dasharadha, Bharatha. Sumitra gave birth to two beautiful twins Lakshmana and Shatrughna.

Hearing their birth everyone celebrated, danced, sang and decorated their houses as if it was their own son that was born. King Dasharadha donated lakhs of cows and gold coins to everyone he met.

A son should be named either by his grandfather or a Guru only. So Dasharadha asked sage Vashishta to name his sons and sage Vashishta named the eldest son of Dasharadha with an easily pronounceable name with only two words, the first word is a  agni beeja-akshara from Ashta-akshari mantra and the other word, an amrutha beeja-akshara from Pancha-akshari mantra  and named him:

"RAMA"

He then named Dasharadha's second son as Bharatha, third son as Lakshmana and fourth son as Shatrughna.

Make it a practice to write Rama naama as frequently as possible, get a notebook and start writing. Let us make it a habit to make our kids to write it at least 11 times a day which will definitely save them all their life.

Shrimad Ramayanam- Balakanda -1 (Post 6)

Namaste!

Recap from last week: Sage Valmiki asked sage Narada to describe a person who has 16 gunas (qualities) mentioned by him. Sage Narada describes the story of Rama till that day in just 100 slokas (Sankshipta Ramayanam).

So after sage Narada left, sage Valmiki left for river Thamasa to offer his Sandhyavandana. Whatever he was doing, his heart was filled with only Rama. He was immensely happy, whatever he saw, he related it to Rama. He then finished his Sandhyavandana and then started walking back where he saw a krounchi and krouncha (a type of female and male bird) playing and he felt happy. He suddenly saw a hunter hitting the male bird, Krouncha and it died immediately. Till now he was immensely happy seeing and feeling Rama everywhere and then suddenly after seeing the male bird dead and female bird screaming he feld terribly sad and anger towards the hunter. He cried and cursed the hunter. This is where the book of Ramayana was born.

There was no fault of the hunter, he did his duty which was kill and sell the bird for money but then why did Valmiki feel the anger and curse him. He felt the story of Rama inside him and cursed. So how did he relate Ramayana and the death of the male bird? He saw the Krouncha as the Ravana and Krounchi as Mandodari (wife of Ravana) and the hunter as the MahaVishnu. Ravana(krouncha) without following the laws and ethics roamed all around and harassed every lady he saw, so the Lord(hunter) had enough of this harassment and killed him but Mandodari(krounchi) who was a noble lady could not bear the death of her husband and cried hard. There he saw the story of Ramayana unfold in front of him and uttered a sloka(poem) in the midst of his shoka(sadness) as a curse. Though it looks like a curse from outside, this  shloka when analysed with the poetic rules inturn turns into a praise of the Lord.

He was purely surprised and confused with what all just happened. Then came Lord Brahma to his aashrama, who told him that all this happened for a reason and the Lord himself wished for Valmiki to write the story of his avataar, the Rama Avataar. Lord Brahma gave him a boon that when Valmiki would offer his prayers and sit to write Ramayana, he would not only see what happened but also he would be able to see what was running in the minds of the characters at that moment.

Balakanda:

Once upon a time there was a Kingdom named Kosala on the banks of Sarayu and the city Ayodhya was its capital. It was very fertile and very large kingdom built by King Manu from the Ikshvaku Vamsha. It was always prosperous and very secure. The guards and archers guarding the kingdom worked as per the rules of Dharma. They never shot/killed a person who was an orphan or who had no sons. They never shot anyone who ran away from them or who fell at their feet asking for mercy. The rulers always wished for their population to grow and hence never killed anyone without a valid reason to do so. All that mattered to them was Dharma.

At the present time, King Dasharadha was the ruler of the kingdom. He always gifted generously to the Brahmins, soldiers and needy. He was a skilled fighter, he could wage a war with numerous soldiers at a time. He always sponsored yagnas for the good of his people. He was friendly to everyone and never spared an enemy. He was wealthier as Indra and Kubera and always ruled according to law.

There were no miser, no spend- thrift, no illiterate citizens in the kingdom. All citizens were wise, happy, peace loving people. Every citizen always was civilized, wealthy and good natured.

Sage Valmiki says there was no one who was an "alpa bhogavan"- not self contended- How could one always be a self contended person? By being happy with what one has. If someone argues that they have more jewelry than you have then be happy that you have one less worry to bear in your head! Its security would be more important and worrisome than feeling happy that you have it. Its how we learn to start living self contended. As said earlier, Ramayana is not just a story, its a guide to happy living, its however you want to learn from it.

Coming back, Sage Vashishta and Sage Vaamadeva were the prime purohiths of Kosala Rajya. King Dasharadha had eight important prime ministers, namely Drushti, Jayantha, Vijaya, Sidhartha, Ardhasaadhaka, Ashoka, Manthrapaala and Sumanthra. The prime ministers were completely knowledgable and uncorrupted. They possessed the skill of deciding the right and wrong. They had the knowledge of knowing and using the resources only till their needs suffice and not waste anything. They would never punish even an enemy if he did not do a crime and would never leave out even their sons if they were punishable.

The ministers or the citizens would never talk bad or count their parents' or Guru's mistakes. Today we see movies that insult teachers, parents; we hear kids talking or calling names of their teachers. Where did we come? The land where parents and teachers were next to God has turned into a land where they are the ones first insulted. Didn't we do this? I accept! I did this mistake! Aren't our siblings, friends, kids doing this? Is it not the right time to turn to Ramayana, surrender, learn and rectify our mistakes?

So in Kosala, all and everything was happy and peaceful except one- the King himself! He was sad that he had no sons who could carry his family name and rule the country after him. He thought for long and thought only Ashwamedha yaaga as the only prayaschitha (asking for forgiveness) for his sins that were stopping him from having sons. He summoned his ministers and consulted his purohiths about the yaaga he decided on doing. Everyone were happy and purohiths blessed him that he would have the best sons in the world. He knew his Gurus and purohiths would never go wrong, their blessings would definitely come true.

Sage RushyaShrunga, grandson of the great Kashyapa muni and son of Vibhandaka maharshi was called in with all due respects to lead the yaga. Shrunga means a horn. Sage Rushyashrunga was a peculiar sage who was born with a horn on his head like a deer; he was born to Vibhandaka maharshi and a deer. This deer was actually an apsarasa (dancer in heaven) by name Chitra Rekha. This ChitraRekha was once dancing in front of Indra but was looking at a deer nearby instead of concentrating. Hence Indra cursed her to be born as a deer and told her that her curse would be broken when she would find Vibhandaka Maharshi and have a son with him. This Rushyashrunga later became a great tapasvi with whose mere words one could get what he wanted.

Precap Next week: So how was the great Ashwamedha yaaga conducted? Can we do it even today? The discussion about even the small but important facts/details of the birth of a Great Hero and Lord- Shri RamaChandra Murthy.

Shrimad Ramayanam - Starting Note (Post 5)

Namaste!
I feel so fortunate that I could start Shri Ramayana on the auspicious day of Sri Hanumad Jayanthi. It is said that one can never be able to read, write or even think about Ramayana without the blessings of Lord Hanuman. So we all are blessed this day that He allowed us to start our journey to the eternal bliss!

Shrimad Ramayanam

Who describes The Lord? Our Vedas describe The Lord. They tell us what are the qualities and duties of The Lord (God). So what do Vedas talk mainly about? They talk about Dharma- Principles to lead a life. On the other hand; Rama, as proposed by the Vedas is the incarnation of God. So what is the connection between both the statements above? Rama is Dharma and Dharma is Rama. That is how He lived all eleven thousand years of his life. He never did anything opposing Dharma, no matter how many troubles He had to face. We will see this as we read in-depth about Him and His life.

What is Dharma?

It becomes Dharma when you learn about a principle (however small it is) and practice it but not if you convert it to however you wish. Knowing it is a part of Dharma, but practicing it is the main gist of Dharma. To know that "Honesty is the best policy" is knowing about a Dharma but when one finds a forgotten wallet and does not return it to its rightful owner then he is going against Dharma!

If we keenly observe Shri Ramayana, we can see that what all Dharmas Rama knows so does Ravana know. Then why at the end did Ravana fall and Rama Win? For example, Rama knows to wake up early, finish all rituals and pray to God. So does Ravana. He also wakes up early and prays to God. Then where did they differ? Rama prays to God and when any other lady stands in front of Him, He treats her with utmost respect as He would treat Maa Shakti. Ravana also prays to God but then he wants every lady when he comes out from the temple. That is the only difference. Practicing Dharma is the only difference that made Rama a God and let Ravana fall down.

"Dharmo rakshathi rakshithaha"
(IF you follow Dharma THEN it protects you)

One might ask, I follow Dharma, I fear God, I do what is good but still I am having troubles and I am unhappy. My friend doesn't believe in God, does what all he can to earn money or fame- let it be against Dharma but still he is happy. Then why should I follow all these principles and fear God? The answer is Ramayana. Ravana had a golden palace, pushpaka vimana (the aeroplane then),ten heads, mighty army, ferocious sons and brothers, he went against Dharma and did whatever he pleased. On the other hand, Rama lived in a hut in the forests, had His one brother by His side and mere monkeys as His army and had to fight the mighty Ravana. BUT! but never left His Dharma. At the end, the mighty Ravana had to fall down and Rama won over him and became the Almighty!

What does Ramayana teach us?

If we want to know how should the relationship be between
  • a husband and wife        - Read Ramayana
  • brothers                         - Read Ramayana
  • father and son                - Read Ramayana
  • employee and employer  - Read Ramayana
  • ruler and his people        - Read Ramayana

Ramayana is not just a book or a man's life, it is much more than that:
  • Ramayana is Jyotisha Shastra (astrology)
  • Ramayana is Vaasthu Shastra (Architecture)
  • Ramayana is Dharma Shastra (principles)
  • Ramayana is vaak Shastra (Speech and its importance)
  • Ramayana is Dharma paripaalana (righteous ruling)
  • Ramayana is Nyaya Shastra (Law)
  • Ramayana is Saamajika Shastra (Social Science)
  • Ramayana is Shankuna Shastra (art of predicting the future)
  • Ramayana is Paryavarana Shastra (eco science)
  • Ramayana is Guru Bhakti (art of becoming a great disciple)
  • Ramayana is maanasika Shastra (psychology)

Ramayana is however you want to look at it. Sage Valmiki never credits either Rama or Ravana. He just gives us the fact. You can follow which ever path you want but will face the consequences of your choice.

Why did Rama come as Nara (Human) in this incarnation?

Ravana once did a tapa and asked a boon from Lord Brahma. Ravana asked that he not be killed by anyone and mentioned Gods, demons, devils, kinneras, kimpurushas everyone in that list except nara and vaanara (man and monkey). He treated nara and vaanara as the worst and weakest. So the Lord decided that He would come as a human this time to teach the world how great a human being is and brought vanaras as His army.

How did it all start?

Did anyone of us ever think----- Why do we consider Ramayana to be so sacred? Why do we consider Rama our lord? If He was a God why did He have to go through all those troubles in His life? Why did He have to go live in the forests for fourteen long years? He could have easily created a mansion with magic and lived there. If He was the Paramatma why did He not foresee Seetha's kidnap? Why couldn't He kill Ravana and all other demons at once and at the starting? Why did He not kill that man who commented on Seetha's character and why did He send Her to forests again? If He did not stop any of these right at the start why do we consider Him a God and seek his refuge to solve our problems?

The Answer to all these Questions came from One Question. The one question that Sage Valmiki asked the divine singer, the greatest Guru, Sage Narada. It all started then!

Get ready! It all starts now!

Once upon a time, Sage Valmiki was in his aashrama (cottage) and Sage Narada visited him. After Narada told Valmiki, the Sankshipta Ramayana (shortened version the story), Valmiki taught Lava and Kusha this story to preach it to the world. That means, Lava, Kusha (sons of Seetha-Rama) were old enough to have their thread ceremony done, listen and grasp Valmiki's teachings and then sing them. Then who told the story to Valmiki? How could he tell each and every detail that happened in Rama's life when Rama was still alive and was not considered a God yet? Even before Narada visited Valmiki, Valmiki was a Tapasvi (a sage who does krucha and chandrayana vratas; i.e, increase one morsel (mouthful) of food every day till full moon day and then decrease once morsel a day till new moon day and fast that day), he was always in a state of meditation and reached a stage where he could realize the Paramatma. So then came the Guru (Narada), who could teach him about the Eeshwara (God). Also, he had a boon from Lord Brahma that if he could do his Aachamana (a form of praying) and sit to meditate he could see not just what happened but also what was running in the minds of the people that were present at that time.  So what did Valmiki ask Narada for him to tell all this story? Valmiki asked Narada if there is a man with sixteen qualities, namely:

Konvasmin saampratam loke gunavaan kascha veeryavaan |
dharmagnascha kritagnascha satyavaanko dhridavratah ||
chaaritrenacha ko yuktah sarva bhooteshu ko hitah |
